Sport is popular all over the Indian landscape, however one sport sits atop of the pile in India and across the globe that is the almost godly game of cricket. The interest across this Asian borders on the fanatical everywhere one travels inland or along the coastal areas in every town and villages men and children are to be seen everywhere playing the great game of cricket. Then we have the Indian national cricket that play test cricket and one day spectacles – London – Barbados – Sharjah – Sydney et al.
But the game in India is much more than just a game it is vast revenue generator there is attendance revenue at major games – food and beverage earnings – Kit bats, gloves, helmets, balls, caps etc – enormous broadcasting fees – Satellite TV concessions across the world – billions of US dollars in advertisement contracts – plus multi million dollar sponsorship deals for players and teams. Then moving on to the indirect service providers who benefit from cricket like – Airlines – Newspapers – Internet Websites – Hotels – Private hire and taxi cabs – security companies – clothes manufacturers – the list is endless all making money indirectly off the back of cricket.
To write about Indian cricket is one thing that is how can one say ‘Hands Off’ but when you actually go to live cricket games and take in the atmosphere it is often possible to breath in the tension as the game progresses yes the Indians have managed to turn the gentleman’s game into a duel in the heat of the sun where winning is the only option – all other results like a drawn game or a defeat are off limits in India cricket is all about winning!
